Edge of Twilight. Excerpted in Forrest's anthology. (A*** - LIL)

SUMMARY:

Val McGregor is an airline stewardess (oo la la). Married once, she now sleeps around a LOT. Then she meets Toni, the new stewardess. She is inexplicably drawn to Toni. They get drunk and make out. Val assumes it's because they were drunk, but Toni thought Val was putting out lesbo vibes and has fallen in love with her. Val runs off to Miami to sort things out with about three different men (it's hard to keep track, they all seem to want to have sex with her, and she kind of wants to have sex with them). After finally coming to terms with her lesbian proclivities (she has to sleep with about three men to figure this out), Val goes back to Toni. These two characters will be revisited in her "Another Kind of Love"

OPINION:

I don't care as much as I should about the characters. It is nice to have a happy ending. Christian also does a good job of explaining the difference between sex with a man and sex with a woman. Toni says at one time, "Why is lesbian love worse than sleeping around heterosex?" In some ways the book seems ahead of its time in the questions that it asks. It is very accepting of lesbianism (as long as we don't "blatantly flaunt our homosexuality.") Too much breeder sex and not very well written, although it does have some great quotes (see below).

CONTENT:

Lots of drinking, lots of meaningless straight sex. Lesbian soap opera. Lots of heterosexual sex – the two lesbian protagonists never actually go all the way except by implication.

QUOTES:

"You're the only woman I've ever met that I'd be 'fem' for."

"Don’t say 'queers', it's offensive. We're 'gay' of Lesbian or homosexuals, and sometimes 'twilight people', but not 'queers.'"

"Look at me, Val. Do I look like a freak? Don't you see that what you, or I, do in bed is nobody's business? If you were a religious person and believed that sex was only for populating the world then you would be going against your religion. But you've already said you are a tramp. Is that better than what I am?"

TYPE: Lesbian author, not great writing, but some ahead of its time awareness of homophobia.
