We Too Are Drifting
Wilhelm's first novel. I still think she is a better writer than her Hemmingway pretensions allow for. This novel tells the story of Jan, an artist and a lesbian, who is in a physical relationship with a married woman (who for some reason sticks around for Jan's emotional abuse). Jan meets Victoria and falls immediately in love. Victoria falls for Jan too, but probably not enough to leave her suburban loving family.
Jan: an artist whose effeminate twin brother was hung, she is having a purely sexual relationship with the married Madeleine until she meets Victoria.
Madeleine: loves Jan, but not enough to leave her husband.
Victoria: a straight girl from the suburbs – can she give it all up for Jan?
Kletkin: Jan's doomed best friend and fellow artist. He once had a thing for Jan, but was smart enough to know no man would ever posses her.
Jaye Zimet puts this book in the 'Cliterature' section of her book.
